Cardiff Castle

Every round-up of Cardiff’s best sights must include this striking castle at the heart of the city – it’s colourful in terms of both its appearance and history. The Norman core of the castle was built late in the 11th century on top of earlier Roman ruins, and gradually the site expanded into the sizeable complex it is today. It was during the Victorian era that the interior of the castle was redecorated in the elaborate Gothic revival style for which it is now famous, featuring a fantastical medieval theme concocted by the talented architect and painter William Burges. The castle is now owned by the city and is by far its most popular tourist attraction, as well as home to several regimental museums.

Dr. Who Experience

A newer addition to Cardiff’s tourist scene, the Dr. Who Experience is a must-see for fans of the long-running BBC programme – or anyone who likes to peek behind the scenes and see how special effects are made. The Experience is an interactive adventure that lets you join the Doctor on a journey through time – along the way, you’ll get to fly in the TARDIS and battle Cybermen and Daleks. Afterwards you can check out the most extensive collection of Dr. Who costumes, props and other artefacts in the world – including the TARDIS set used by David Tennant during his time on the show.

St. Fagans: National History Museum

Anyone who thinks history is dry and boring hasn’t experienced the magic of strolling through time at St. Fagans: National History Museum. Located in the picturesque grounds of the 16th-century St. Fagans Castle, this vast living history site is widely acknowledged as one of the best open-air museums in Europe. More than 40 original buildings of historic significance have been moved to the site and re-erected in around 100 acres of pleasant parkland; by wandering through this “village” you can view the evolution of everyday life from ancient Celtic times up to the present. You can also meet traditional artisans and living history interpreters who help to bring the setting to vivid life.

Millennium Stadium

Sports fans will almost certainly wish to make the pilgrimage to Millennium Stadium, home of international rugby and football in Cardiff as well as numerous world-class motorsports events. Previous events have included Rugby World Cup and RBS Six Nations matches, plus FA Cup Finals and the British Speedway Grand Prix. The venue also plays host to international arena tours, including the likes of Rihanna and Bruce Springsteen, so if you’re planning your trip around a big event you may want to look at hotels situated near the Millennium Stadium to make it easier to get back after the show.

Bute Park

If you’ve started to wear yourself out with shopping and sightseeing, the extensive grounds of Bute Park are an ideal place to relax and unwind in nature. This charming green space at the centre of the city was originally a private garden belonging to Cardiff Castle, but is now open for the public to enjoy, with a variety of events and activities running throughout the year. The park is home to an interesting array of wildlife and plants, including the lovely Bute Park Arboretum, plus a timber sculpture trail and the remains of a medieval friary, among other attractions. With sports facilities, an interpretation centre, toilets and a café, it’s well equipped for a family day out.
